Arthur Japin

The acclaimed Dutch author and laureate of numerous literary awards is renowned chiefly for his sensitive and authentic renderings of history and novelized biographies of famous personalities. His epic debut translated into English as The Two Hearts of Kwasi Boachi (published in Dutch in 1997), describing the life of African princes at the Dutch royal court in early 19th century, catapulted him among Netherlands’ bestselling authors. For his literary rendering of the first love of the famed philanderer Casanova, published in English as In Lucia’s Eyes (in Dutch in 2003), Japin was awarded the prestigious Libris Prize. His subsequent works include a biographical novel on the love and ill-fated life of the famous Russian dancer Nijinsky – Vaslav (2010) – and another novel dedicated to the composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Kolja (2017). His latest book, Mrs. Degas, is a fictionalized account of the life of the painter Edgar Degas. Besides novels, Japin has also authored numerous short stories and scripts for theatre, television and film. His books have been translated into over twenty languages and have sold more than half a million copies in the Netherlands alone.
