She is a French writer. Her first novel Une gourmandise (Gallimard, 2000; in Czech Pochoutka, Host, 2009) became the biggest surprise of the French literary autumn of 2000 and has been translated into 12 languages. Another novel, L’élégance du hérisson (Gallimard, 2006; in Czech S elegancí ježka, Host, 2008), topped the French bestseller list for more than a hundred weeks, and has enjoyed similar success in other countries. In her novels, Muriel Barbery dispels social prejudices and reflects on how philosophy can be translated into everyday life. Her latest novel, Une rose seule (Actes Sud, 2020; in Czech Růže sama, Host, 2021) is inspired by her two-year stay in Japan.
