Ljudmila Ulická

Lyudmila Ulitskaya studied biology at the Moscow State University, later obtaining a PhD in genetics. Her scientific background influences her writing. She often weaves themes of human nature, morality and the complexities of life into her work. Ulitskaya’s literary career began in the late 1980s when she turned to a full-time writing career. She gained widespread acclaim with her debut novel Sonechka (1992), which explores the lives of Russian emmigrants in Paris. Her subsequent works, e.g., Medea and Her Children (1996), The Funeral Party (1997) and Daniel Stein, Interpreter (2006), further solidified her reputation as a master storyteller. Ulitskaya’s writing has been praised for its profound insights into human nature, its nuanced portrayal of Russian society and its elegant prose. She has received numerous awards. Beyond her literary achievements, Ulitskaya is also known for her activism and social commentary. Since 2021, he has been living in exile in Berlin.
