Martyna Bunda

Fiction-writer and journalist for the prestigious Polish weekly Polityka. In her novels, translated into Czech by Barbora Kolouchová and published by Argo, Bunda revisits the landscapes of her childhood – the Kashubia region by the Baltic Sea, which for centuries had been the home of a small Slavonic people speaking its own distinct language reminiscent of the now-extinct Polabian. The author’s prosaic debut Nieczułość (2019) describes the march of history from a female perspective. It tells the story of three sisters, their mother and a trauma caused by the war, describing lives that oscillate between love and heartlessness. The novel was nominated for Poland’s most prestigious literary award, the Nike, and shortlisted for the 2018 Gdynia literary award in the fiction category. The book fair will mark the publication of a Czech translation of another of the author’s novels, Kot niebieski, a retrospective look at the seven centuries of Kashubian history in a mysterious story blending spirituality with rationality.
