War correspondent in Iraq and Afghanistan, Jack Fairweather is an Oxford graduate and author of successful current-affair book titles. His collaborations include The Daily Telegraph and The Washington Post and he is holder of the British Journalism Award. In 2019 Fairweather published The Volunteer: One Man’s Mission to Lead an Underground Army Inside Auschwitz and Stop the Holocaust – book focusing on Witold Pilecki, member of the Polish resistance who voluntarily entered the Auschwitz extermination camp, established a clandestine network there and managed to escape in order to convey information on the holocaust machinery to the outside world. In 1948 Pilecki was executed by communists in a political show trial. The Volunteer has received the prestigious Costa Book Award in the United Kingdom and was published in Czech in Lubomír Sedlák’s translation by Albatros Publishers (2020).
