Mikael Ross

Berlin-based comic book artist, focusing mainly on documentary work. After training as a theatre tailor at the Bavarian State Opera, he attended the Weissensee Academy of Arts in Berlin for four years and then spent a year abroad in Brussels, where he studied comics at the Saint-Luc School of the Arts. He is the author of five comics, including The Thud, which won the Max and Moritz Prize, and der vehrkerte Himmel, which won the Peng Prize – both for best German-language comic book. He is known for his sensitive combination of social themes and distinctive artistic style. His work often focuses on outsiderism, identity, and life on the margins of society. He gained international attention with his debut Totem, followed by the acclaimed book Der Umfall, dedicated to the lives of people with mental disabilities, and Goldjunge, inspired by the true story of a young man searching for his place in society. Ross's style is characterized by expressive drawings, empathy for his characters, and an emphasis on authentic settings and language. The graphic novels Nehoda (2021) and Nirvána je tady (2021) have been published in Czech, translated by Michaela Škultéty and published by Centrála.
