Boualem Sansal

An Algerian writer who worked as a government official before being dismissed due to his outspoken views. Sansal gained international recognition with novels like Le Serment des Barbares and 2084 – La Fin du Monde, which draw comparisons to Orwell’s 1984. His works, often censored in Algeria, explore themes of history, identity, and freedom. Despite political pressures, he remains a vocal advocate for secularism and democracy. Boualem Sansal was arrested in mid-November 2024 at Algiers’s airport after criticising Algerian leaders on numerous occasions. For this he risks the death penalty. Two of his books are available in Czech: Němcova vesnice aneb Deníky bratří Schillerových (The German Mujahid; Pistorius & Olšanská, 2012) and 2084Konec světa (2084 – The End of the World).
