                            Portuguese author who focuses on historical memory, postcolonial experience and the position of women in society. She debuted in 1980 with her novel O Dia dos Prodígios, but it was with A Costa dos Murmúrios, a book reflecting on the colonial war, that she gained recognition in Portugal and abroad. In addition to novels, she also writes short stories, essays, feuilletons, plays and children’s books. Her books have been translated into more than twenty languages and have won prestigious international awards. Two of them have been adapted into films. Lídia Jorge is a regular contributor to the newspapers Jornal de Letras, Público and El País. Her novels Os Memoráveis (Nezapomenutelní) and Misericórdia(Milosrdenství) have been published in Czech.
