Utz Rachowski

At the age of seventeen, he was expelled from school in the former GDR for founding a philosophical club. In 1979, he was sentenced to 27 months in prison for distributing forbidden literature. After one year he was deported to West Germany as a political prisoner. He is the author of several short story collections, poetry collections, and essays. Since 2003, he has been working as an advisor for citizens persecuted by the communist dictatorship in East Germany. He has received numerous scholarships and awards for his work, including the Reiner Kunze Prize in 2007 and the Nicolas Lenau Prize in 2014 for Miss Suki oder Amerika ist nicht weit. As of May 2025, he is a scholarship holder of the Prague Literary House in collaboration with the Saxon Cultural Foundation.
