Associate professor of Czech and Slovak at the University of Oxford, and previously senior lecturer in Russian and Czech at the University of Bristol. From 1993 to 1996 he taught English and British Studies at Palacký University, Olomouc. In addition to numerous articles on twentieth-century and contemporary Czech and Slovak fiction, he is the author of Literature in Post-Communist Russia and Eastern Europe: The Russian, Czech and Slovak Fiction of the Changes (2005) and Vladislav Vančura: The Heart of the Avant-garde (2007), and the lead editor of Translating the Literatures of Small European Nations (2020).
