This Colombian writer and journalist studied Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Turin. Shortly after his return to Colombia, paramilitaries murdered his father and threatened the writer himself, so he left for Italy again, where he was translating Italian literature. In addition to essays, short stories, poems, translations and literary criticism, he has published several novels, the most successful, El olvido que seremos (Oblivion: A Memoir, 2005) was made into a film in 2020 by Fernando Trueba. His books have been translated into more than fifteen languages. In June 2023, he was injured in the Russian missile attack on Kramatorsk during a meeting with the Ukrainian writer Victoria Amelina (Amelina succumbed to her injuries).
