At the age of five, Helmut Kopetzky was forced to move with his mother and grandparents to Fulda in the Bombardy district. After high school, he worked as an intern at a local newspaper and studied theatre studies, art history and journalism. He moved to Berlin, where he worked in the media mainly as a freelance writer and director. In the 1970s, he directed a number of programmes for children and young people, including programmes for the ZDF television. For radio, he made more than a hundred feature projects and series on the topics of the two world wars, the Soviet Union and Russia, events in South America and the Middle East. He has also trained future radio creators in many countries around the world. Throughout his life, his closest collaborator was his wife Heidrun. His son Jan is a freelance photographer.
