This prominent German lawyer and famous novelist lives alternately in Germany and the USA. His 1995 novel, The Reader, has become a literary phenomenon and has been translated into fifty languages. It has also been successfully made into a film – directed by Stephen Daldry and starring Kate Winslet (2008). The prose novels Flights of Love (2001), Homecoming (2007), Self’s Punishment (2009; with Walter Popp), The Weekend (2011) and Summer Lies (2017) have also been published in Czech. In 2019, the novel Olga was published, with which the writer “revised” 20th-century German history. In 2021, the short story collection Colours of Farewell was published in Czech translation. It is the author’s masterpiece – he asks fundamental questions and does not hesitate to answer them. His latest novel, The Granddaughter (2022), follows the relationship of a young couple from divided parts of Germany, but also the situation of the neo-Nazi community after reunification.
