Tonio Schachinger received the German Book Prize in 2023 for his second novel, Echtzeitalter. In it, he drew on his own experiences at an elite Viennese grammar school, which he attended as the son of an Austrian diplomat with Latino ancestry on his mother’s side. He grew up between Nicaragua and Vienna, where he studied German and applied linguistics with a creative writing minor. He has already confirmed his literary talent with his debut novel Nicht wie ihr, which was nominated for the German Book Prize in 2020. He is the co-editor of the Jenny literary magazine.
