Radek Rak is one of Poland’s most distinctive contemporary novelists and a trained veterinarian. He has written books that blend realistic and fantastical motifs to create a strong symbolic level. Rak made his debut with short stories in the Nowa Fantastyka magazine in 2011. He became famous for his third book Báje o hadím srdci (The Tale of the Serpent’s Heart, 2020) (Czech: Host 2023, translated by Michala Benešová), for which he won the European Science Fiction Society Award, the prestigious Polish Nike Literary Award and the Janusz A. Zajdel Award or the Jerzy Żuławski Literary Award. It has also been adapted for opera and theatre, an exhibition has been created and a film adaptation is in the pipeline.
