Jan Faktor was born in Prague. After completing his distance studies at the Prague University of Economics and Business, he moved to East Berlin in 1978. He wrote experimental texts, since 1985 only in German. In GDR his works were published in underground publications, he participated in readings in apartments, unofficial galleries and church communities. Since 1991 he has devoted himself exclusively to literature. He published three more collections and in the second half of the 1990s began writing prose. The manuscript of his novel Schornstein won the prestigious Alfred Döblin Prize in 2005; his novel Georgs Sorgen um die Vergangenheit oder im Reich des heiligen Hodensack-Bimbams von Prag was published in 2010 and was well received by the readers and critics. In 2010 he received the Candide Preis award for his past work. His latest novel Trottel won the 2022 Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize.
