Guest of the book fair
Irena Brežná emigrated with her parents from Slovakia to Switzerland in 1968. She studied Slavic studies, philosophy and psychology in Basel. She worked as a journalist for German media and exile radio stations and as a research psychologist and interpreter. At the same time, she was involved with Amnesty International on behalf of Soviet and Czechoslovak dissidents. She was a military reporter in Chechnya, where she supported women’s humanitarian projects. She has published ten books in German. She has won numerous awards for her journalistic and literary texts in Germany, Switzerland and Slovakia. In Prague she will present her novel The Thankless Foreigner (Seagull Books London Ltd, 2023, Czech edition: Baobab/G plus G, 2021), which was awarded the Swiss Literature Award in 2012. The book is a literarily refined experience of emigration with universal validity and a dose of humour.
